UK news: Gay weddings in church. Here comes another ruckus.
PM, David Cameron, and Deputy PM, Nick Clegg have commented on reports that the Government is to allow same-sex marriages to take place in churches.
Nick Clegg, confirming the news, said “It’s very important to remember that in our plans we’re not going to force any church or any religious denomination to hold same sex marriage ceremonies if they don’t want to but I do think it’s time that we allow any couple, no matter who they are, to marry if that’s what they want to do.”
As reported here before, groups such as the Quakers, Unitarians and Liberal Judaism support marriage rights for gay couples and have stated they would like to provide the ceremonies. But traditional Christianity, represented by the Catholic Church and Church of England, is opposed to the measure,
The UK’s most senior Catholic leader, Cardinal Keith O’Brien described the measure as “grotesque”. For the C.of E. the former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey, also warned that equal marriage would pave the way for Mormon-style polygamous relationships. I guess they won't be joining the honeymoon!
On the wedding night.
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), overall responsible for responding to this year’s public consultation on equal marriage, may make its official recommendations as early as Monday.
Lustralboy awaits this announcement with much hope and some amusement. If only the reactionary Catholic and Anglican churches would see this as an opportunity to join the modern world, their churches might start filling again. If only they would understand that such societal vindictiveness is deplorable and reminds us all that issues like the gay marriage campaign are as crucial for the pursuit of equality and justice as they are for the issue itself. Don't hold your breath. We predict a vista of crumbling an empty churches all over the land.
