Tron Legacy, the preview. Digital loveliness!

We’ve been pretty damning of sequels recently. So it’s a relief to welcome the imminent arrival of Tron Legacy, the pre-Xmas digital blockbuster that updates the 1982 original.

Steven Lisberger brought a distinctive look to the original with the first extensive use of computer graphics in a major movie. It worked and spawned a plethora of video games and comic books. And now the sequel.

Two things will make this movie a big hit. One, directed by Joe Kosinski, it looks startlingly beautiful. However lightweight the plot, your eyes are in for a visual feast. Two, Daft Punk composed and recorded the soundtrack. So expect moody, sweeping soundscapes building the tension to explosive sonic climaxes.

The trailer introduces Sam Flynn (Garret Hedlund), being briefed by Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner) on the news that Sam’s Dad is alive and well and maybe busy on some mysterious work that might “change everything…science, medicine, religion.” Within a secret back room accessed through a Tron machine Sam encounters a gateway to a new digital world.

Legacy’s attempt at mining for depth of meaning is vague to the point that it becomes useless to try and make sense of it. The elder Flynn’s talk of utopia, digital frontiers and biodigital jazz carries no weight except to serve as some kind of justification for his obsession and self-imposed exile.
