A "Gay Rainbow" that appeared over Maurice Williamson's Electorate Office on the day of his speech.
It happened just a week after huge strides towards gay marriage in France and Uruguay. Maurice Williamson, New Zealand M.P, had other Parliamentarians in hysterics with a speech delivered ahead of New Zealand becoming the first Asia-Pacific nation to legalize same-sex marriage. They arrive as the 13th in the world to approve gay marriage.
Both amusing and poignant, his comments included: "I've had a reverend in my local electorate say, 'The gay onslaught will start the day this law is passed.' Well, we are struggling to know what the gay onslaught will look like. I also had a leader telling me I would burn in the fires of hell for eternity, and that was a bad mistake, because I've got a degree in physics."
More seriously, he observed, "All we are doing with this bill is allowing two people who love each other to have that love recognized by way of marriage. We are not declaring nuclear war on a foreign state; we are not bringing a virus in that could wipe out our agriculture sector forever."
Lustralboy says: "Do view the whole segment of the speech above. It is truly magnificent. New Zealanders will be "putting the ring on it " in just four months. Bring it on, My Precious!
