If you live in the East, some of you may have seen the startling new Toyota Auris commercial. Based on the reasonable premise that it not a car for everyone, it features striking model, Stav Strashko, 20, born in the Ukraine, now based in Tel Aviv.
Stav joins an intriguing team of androgynous, sometimes gender-bending male models originating in Eastern Europe, including Andrej Pejic, Neksi Kind, Vasiliy Makarov and Stas Fedyan, featured here before and to be found below in Related Stories.
Commenting on his career path, he has said, "I realized that I was androgynous when I began to model. All the stylists put women's clothes on me and then it struck me that I can really look like a woman [...] I remember myself as a child playing with my mom's makeup a few times when she wasn't looking."
Happily Stav also says he's comfortable in his own skin: "I've never thought about becoming a woman. I feel very comfortable in my own body just the way it is."
Here come a few more pictures of Stav in boyish mode. Scroll to the bottom for his decidedly girly performance in the commercial.
And now the video. It opens with classic adland clichés: long-haired blonde model in a string bikini swishes towards the car... until the end when the swimsuit model is revealed as a fella! Surprise!
