Fur coat, lace shirt, and clutch bag are an unusual combination for a boy. However, on Kinder Au, with his certain indescribable charm, the feminine items work perfectly. The 25 year-old is more than just a boy who obsesses about luxury clothing. He is also the visual and conceptual inspiration of the Lustralboy.com. Franco Wang talks to the original Lustralboy.
Franco Wang: Lustralboy is an unusual word. What does it mean?
Kinder Au: It’s special, isn’t it? My lover, Mike, created this collective name for all the lustrous boys like me. In France, apparently, we would have been described as La Jeunesse Dorée, the gilded youth. (Giggle)
FW: How would you describe the character of Lustralboy?
KA: Superficially, we would probably be known as the “party boys”, dressed to amaze. But really we just dress to please ourselves. (Smiles) So we, the Lustralboys, are elegant, fun, sexy, sensual, self-cultivated, and have the sense of a quality lifestyle. We can be as at home in a fur wrap as in spangled underwear. That’s what enables us to be sexy and elegant all at once. (Giggles again).
FW: What motivates you to start an online magazine for this group of young men?
KA: Well, there are many websites specifically for hunky guys, hairy bears, leather lovers and so on. However, I don’t see any website for extravagant young boys. Besides, most of the homosexual websites are sex-sell. Well, I agree sex is a beautiful thing that we all need, but does it mean everything? Not really. To make us better men, we need something more inspirational, informative, decent, and tasteful. That’s why we have the Lustralboy.com – young, elegant, sexy and cultured.
FW: Young, elegant, sexy and cultured. What can we do to achieve these?
KA: “Practice makes perfect” cannot be applied to the first three because they are all individual characteristics. You can’t stop aging and you can’t pretend to be elegant or sexy if you haven’t got that gene. However you can be a cultivated person by absorbing different kinds of knowledge.
FW: So do you claim that the Lustralboy.com is a style guidebook for young men?
KA: (Laugh) No! Definitely not. Guidebook is a bit too heavy for us. Lustralboy.com is more like a lifestyle sharing website. In fact, we invite our readers to interact. That’s why we have some interesting features, for example, the “Be Lustral, be our model” photo shoot campaign and ” Vote now, babe!” Furthermore, our readers can become one of us as a contributor too. So, through interaction, we can also learn from our readers.
FW: Where do you expect to find your most dedicated fans of the site?
KA: I’m not going to find them because I think if people identify themselves as a Lustralboy, they will come and find us! Am I right? I guess Mike will be grumpy about what I’ve just said! (Laugh) Well, he is a marketing guru, so I will leave that part to him.
FW: So, apart from your lover, is Mike also your business partner?
KA: He’s my everything! (Giggle) He’s my mentor, my guardian, and yes, my business partner.
FW: Right. But Mike lives in London and you mainly stay in Hong Kong. How do you guys cope with this relationship?
KA: Well, we devote a lot of effort to make it works. We communicate on the Internet everyday, and we fly to each other every 2 to 3 months.
FW: Where is the most lustral place that you have been so far?
KA: Each city has its own character. For living, I’d choose Sydney because it’s really relaxing. For Holiday, Théoule-sur-Mer in South of France is definitely our choice. For shopping, no doubt I’d say Hong Kong. Where else can you shop at 11 pm like here? In the Lustraltrip selection of our website, our contributors will have many more suggestions for traveling.
FW: Great. So what’s next for the Lustralboy.com?
KA: It is just the beginning of the Lustralboy. Our wish is to make it an online destination for all the lustral boys on the planet, whether from the old world capitals like London, Paris, Milan, New York or the new happening places, like Sydney, Shanghai, Singapore, Bangkok and, of course, Hong Kong. So at this stage, we just keep on learning and expanding. I believe with our friends’ help, Lustralboy.com can be inspiring and a success.
FW: Thank you for being interviewed, Kinder. All the best for the Lustralboy!
