“It’s a must see for anyone for whom the marvels of Marvel might just occasionally verge on the ridiculous."
Dave Lizewiski (that’s Lize with a Z, Liza!) is an addict of the world of comic books. This New York teenager worships at the altar of the pantheon of superpowered superheroes. Such is his addiction that he aspires to joining their ranks. He buys a green and yellow costume online, rechristens himself Kick-Ass and takes to prowling the neighbourhood on the hunt for trouble. It doesn’t take him long to find it, and to wind up in hospital for treatment for enough stab wounds to keep an army of vampires happy for weeks. Oops, different genre!
Anyway, this is all too amusing to be kept secret and the media jump on the story of the nerdy superhero with predictable enthusiasm. A new star is born, soon joined by a gang of copycats and the two other main protagonists, a retired cop, Big Daddy, and his diminutive sword-wielding daughter, Mindy, otherwise known as Hit Girl. Why? Because she can!
Chloe Grace Moretz as Mindy comes close to stealing the movie, Nicholas Cage has evident fun as the crazed vigilante, Big Daddy, and Aaron Johnson convinces as the geek hero entirely without superpowers. The mix of over-the-top violence, humour verging on the slapstick and a determination to outrage at every turn add up to a must see for anyone for whom the marvels of Marvel might just occasionally verge on the ridiculous.
And guess what? He’ll be back!
