Pierre Commoy and Gilles Blanchard, best known for their kitschy portraits of pop icons, have supplied a set of their most iconic self-portraits for a new collection of T-shirts, launched this month by Ginza.
The prints capture the couple in their signature baroque style, a blend of Pierre's photography and Gilles's hand-painted embellishments, the technique that made therm key figures in the French art scene in the 1980s. Depicted in turn as glittering sailors, camp cosmonauts, rockabilly pistoleros, or newly weds, each tee has a limited 500 print run, and comes wrapped with a certificate of authenticity. Short sleeve T-shirt, $98; Long sleeve T-shirt, $108.
Pierre et Gilles first met at the opening of the Kenzo boutique in Paris, in 1976, and developed their fresh approach to photography based on both the pre- and post-production elements of image making. Their international reputation grew through photographing celebrities in the 1970s and 80s starting with Andy Warhol, photographed in his Paris apartment. Images of Salvador Dali, Mick Jagger, Yves Saint Laurent and Iggy Pop soon followed. In later years, Pierre et Gilles have created dreamlike fashion portraiture for designers such as Thierry Mugler and Jean Paul Gaultier, and immortalised Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Tilda Swinton, Catherine Deneuve, Marilyn Manson and long-time collaborator Marc Almond.
London-based label Ginza works closely with artists to blend art and fashion, curating online exhibitions with the same artists featured on their apparel. Explore them here: http://www.ginzafashion.com/
