Cardinal Keith O'Brien, 75, the UK's most senior Roman Catholic cleric, has today resigned with immediate effect after being accused of "inappropriate acts" by four priests, one of whom is no longer in the church. The Cardinal’s spokesman has said their claims are denied. O’Brien has previously compared gay marriage to slavery, claiming it is a ‘violation of human rights’ and slammed its planned introduction by the Scottish and parliament and Westminster as ‘madness’.
The four priests are apparently all based in the diocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh. They were demanding O’Brien’s immediate resignation to disenable him from participating in the election of the next Pope. They have achieved their goal since the cardinal will not now take part in the election. This will leave Britain unrepresented in the process as he was the only cardinal in the British Catholic churches.
His resignation is yet another heavy blow to the church and Benedict, whose papacy has been mired in repeated controversies over misconduct by clergy in both Europe and the US, its heavy-handed and out-of-touch stance on gay marriage and allegations of corruption and incompetence at the Vatican.
New rumours have linked the Pontiff's resignation to the discovery of a network of gay prelates in the Vatican, some of whom have reportedly been targeted by blackmailers. The Italian daily newspaper La Republica said the pope decided to resign on 17 December – the day he received a dossier compiled by three cardinals delegated to look into the so-called "Vatileaks" affair. The cardinals described a number of factions, including one whose members were "united by sexual orientation".
Lustralboy has to note the huge of irony of Catholicism being brought to its knees by just the gay minority it has chosen to attack with such vitriol for so long. Will it learn a lesson from this? Fat chance!
