Favourite Gay Icons revisited, Anton Hysen included
Everybody loves to nominate their favourite gay icons. We're as guilty as the next guy, daring even to come up with our own all-male Top 100 eighteen months ago. Once the girls are invited in, however, it's a different ball game, well, one without balls, to be precise. This brings us neatly to the recent fun poll run over the Gayday radio station. A band of Gaydar devotees, not perhaps a perfect statistically representative sample, delivered their judgements across ten categories.
Gareth Thomas, the Welsh rugby legend, and frequently featured in these web pages, won Celebrity of the Year, with 27.1% of the votes.
Headliners included Adele, feted by Lustralboy in our "On Being Dumped Playlist" soon after the release of the "21" album. Lady Gaga came a distant second. We doubt she's losing sleep on the matter.
Swedish football player Anton Hysen polled 36.6% of the votes to win Hero of the Year. The 21-year-old son of former Liverpool defender Glenn Hysén came out last year.
When asked if he felt like coming out would affect his career in any way, Hysen said, “People may call me anything they want, it will just make me even more psyched.”
Stephen Fry was named writer of the year, presumably a ringing endordement for his Tweets!
Over 41000 votes were cast in the final stages of Gaydar Radio’s second annual awards.
Anton Hysen, Hero of the Year and Sports Personality of the Year.
The full list of winners:
Hero of the Year: Anton Hysén
Campaigner of the Year: Peter Tatchell
LGBT Organisation of the Year: Gaydar
Celebrity of the Year: Gareth Thomas
Pop Artist of the Year: Adele
Actor of the Year: Meryl Streep
Sports Personality of the Year: Anton Hysén
And you won't need another poll to confirm who's Lustralboy's top of the icons, 2012.
Congratulations, Anton.
