Opening now, 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower' staring Logan Lerman, Ezra Miller and Emma Watson. It's an adaptation of a popular novel about a high school freshman who befriends two older students who, in turn, change the direction of his life.
Title: The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Cast: Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, Ezra Miller
Director: Stephen Chbosky (1:43). PG-13: sexuality, language, teen drug and alcohol use.
We first mentioned "Wallflower" in our Ezra coming out piece a month ago. Now the movie is opening to excellent reviews.
First the plot. The movie, that Chbosky wrote and directed himself, is set in a comfortable Pittsburgh suburb in 1991. Based on Charlie's search for an identity, the mood is established through his fraught first days in high school that deepen his belief that he will forever be a friendless fringe player, the Wallflower of the title.
His best friend, Michael, committed suicide the year before. His second best friend, Susan (Julia Garner), who was Michael's girlfriend, has joined the "in" crowd, of which Charlie is definitely not a part. A football game when he encounters Patrick (Miller), the outrageous school senior leads to an introduction to Patrick's stepsister Sam (Emma Watson) and the idea of a life as a terminal outsider begins to form.
To quote the LA times "Lerman gives Charlie the look of a young colt still trying to get his legs, the awkwardness never overplayed. Watson seems to relish a chance to play a teenager whose only powers are to be smart, sensitive and crush-worthy — she makes sure Sam hits all those notes. But it is Miller, so chilling opposite Tilda Swinton in "We Need to Talk About Kevin," who gives the minutiae that consume teen conversations some much appreciated jolts of electricity. He gets better with every role."
As for the Daily news, they opined "Miller’s wattage is so high, our eyes are most often drawn to him. While supporting characters are usually reduced to a single trait, he has the wisdom — and talent — to braid Patrick’s insecurity, sexuality and artistic curiosity into a complex whole."
