The Catholic Church in Scotland, today stated that Cardinal Keith O’Brien has addressed allegations made against him by five priests within the church, and admitted that his “sexual conduct” has been “below the standards expected of a priest."
A fifth claim of “inappropriate behaviour” towards a male priest was made against Cardinal O’Brien earlier this week. The 74-year-old, former head of the Catholic Church in Scotland, having contested the first set of allegations last weekend, resigned as leader of the Scottish Catholic Church on Monday.
In the statement, released today the Cardinal apologised. He asked for forgiveness, as well as admitting that, despite previously contesting the allegations, some were true. It read: “In recent days certain allegations which have been made against me have become public. Initially, their anonymous and non-specific nature led me to contest them. However, I wish to take this opportunity to admit that there have been times that my sexual conduct has fallen below the standards expected of me as a priest, archbishop and cardinal.
This admission comes just hours before the opening in Rome of the Convocation to elect the new Pope. Clearly these allegations were known long ago to the Vatican. Had they not emerged last week, would not O'Brien still be indulging in his homophobic rants? And wouldn't he be welcomed in Rome to participate in the election?
What a disaster for the Catholic Church, in its timing, it's content and the revelation of huge hypocrisy that goes to the very top of this now defunct, anomalous religeous order.
Byebye to the "Bigot of the Year", drenched in shame along with his Church and all who have revelled in their rampant homophobia.
