Tom Daley will go into this summer’s Olympic Games with two major titles under his belt. He celebrates his 18th birthday today and last night added the European title to the World Series crown he won last month.
Tom crushed his rivals in Eindhoven yesterday to win the European Championship by nearly 50 points. He also set a new personal best of 565.05 points on his way to reclaiming the title he first won as a 13-year-old in the same city. Though his biggest threat for Olympic glory will come from the Chinese, particularly world champion Qiu Bo, the teenager believes the Chinese will be taking notice of his current form. “I think they’ll notice,” said Tom last night. “I don’t know if they’ll be watching the European Championships too closely but I guess the word with spread about my score."
He believes if he can perform like he did yesterday he could have a chance of winning gold in London this summer. “I think if I am to win an Olympic medal I’ll have to score like I did yesterday,” he said. Tom will compete at the National Championships next month before taking a few weeks of down time before the start of the Olympic Games at the end of July.
In the meantime he was also busy yesterday launching his new book at Waterstone's, in his Speedos, even.
It all helps us confirm our good wishes for his Olympic performance. We'll be there for you, Tom!
