The popular and talented "Skyfall" actor Ben Whishaw has officially come out as gay. A spokesman for Whishaw has confirmed that the actor is gay and has been married to his partner, Australian composer Mark Bradshaw, for over a year.
"Ben has never hidden his sexuality, but like many actors he prefers not to discuss his family or life outside of his work," the spokesman said. "Due to speculation, I can confirm that Ben and Mark entered into a civil partnership in August 2012. They were proud to do so and are very happy."
This news may have left many a fan broken-hearted. Wishaw's versatility in movies such as Bond epic, Skyfall, period classic, Brideshead Revisited, and gory chiller, Perfume, had established a huge hearthrob fan base as well as his international reputation.
The British star has faced questions about his sexuality before, but has always asserted his right to privacy. He commented:"As an actor you have total rights to privacy and mystery, whatever your sexuality, whatever you do," he told gay magazine, Out. "I don't see why that has to be something you discuss openly because you do something in the public eye. I have no understanding of why we turn actors into celebrities. It's difficult talking about it. That's why I didn't want to go there, but at the same time I know this is a gay magazine and that means there's a conflict there."
Soon after this recent announcement, both Ben and Mark deleted their facebook pages. Whilst sympathising with their wish to avoid the torment of the paparazzi, their stance differs from recent comings out from the music and theatrical communities, nowadays more inclined to use their celebrity status to support the concept of gay equality. Ezra Miller, Zac Quinto, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Rufus Wainwright, Frank Ocean and Jim Parsons are just a few examples. Review tham all below.
Lustralboy says: Good luck to Ben and Mark. Opting for relative privacy is still a choice they should be allowed to make. There is no upside to media tyranny.
