Music guru DJ Michael explains all.
Aussie electronic duo, Empire of the Sun, formed in 2006, when Luke Steele of the Sleepy Jackson and Nick Littlemore, now back with Pnau, met in a bar in Sydney. Well, where else? This is Australia! The results of their collaboration, the gorgeous synth pop of Walking on a Dream, absolutely deserves their cover exposure for our Style Inheritance issue
Why? Because they have undeniable style, both musically and visually. And because that style comes from the rich heritage of 80’s glampop, polished to a contemporary sheen that echoes Air, Zero & and Mylo. Just the YouTube link, try to sit still, fail hopelessly, and you’ll get my point.

The album has been around a while but has yet to gain the international recognition it merits. Maybe the swooping chords, sublime harmonies and shifting rhythms strike chords with an audience for whom Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, Steely Dan and the Roxie Music of “Avallon” are more than ancient icons.
Tracks such as Standing on the Shore, We are the People and album title track, Walking in a Dream, achieve that elusive trick of potent melody, danceable rhythm and singalong chorus. It’s sheer professionalism, fuelled by a fondness for the past that inspires them rather than trapping them in some retro backwater. It’s as if Daft Punk had overdosed on too many Balearic cocktails and created a new Café del Mar album in their sleep. Yes, effortless does capture the mood.
So there are some pretty recognisable inheritance references. But all credit to Luke and Nick for having the nouse to weave it all together, to have their own take on a yearning for romance, the desire to be swept away on a tsunami of emotion. I’ll boldly go and declare it the most lustral album of the last twelve months. And it’s all for us, because, “we are the people,” aren’t we?
Lustralboy just has to add : "Thrill to the lustral daywear! "
